Featured payment methods in Eritrea
Popular options based on coverage and prominence in this market.
Commercial Bank of Eritrea
The Commercial Bank of Eritrea is the primary state-owned retail bank, maintaining branches in Asmara and major urban centres. It issues basic debit cards for account holders and supports domestic interbank transfers. International card use is extremely limited given Eritrea's isolation from global financial networks.
Himbol Financial Services
Himbol is the government-sanctioned remittance service provider for the Eritrean diaspora, enabling transfers from Eritreans living abroad to recipients inside the country. Given that major international money transfer operators do not operate in Eritrea, Himbol functions as one of the only formal cross-border financial transfer channels. It operates through a network of agents in diaspora-concentrated countries including the UK, Germany, Sweden, the US, and Saudi Arabia.
Cash
Still widely used, particularly in rural areas and among older demographics. Despite rapid digital adoption, cash remains prevalent for everyday small transactions.
Cash (Eritrean Nakfa)
The Eritrean Nakfa is the sole legal tender and the overwhelmingly dominant payment method for all transactions within the country. Currency controls and state oversight of the economy mean that virtually all retail, agricultural, and informal trade is conducted in cash. The government has periodically enforced currency exchange rules and cash withdrawal limits through the banking system.
Cash (AUD)
Australian dollars are the dominant currency in Tuvalu, accepted alongside the Tuvaluan dollar (pegged 1:1 to AUD). Physical cash is used in virtually all commercial transactions given the near-total absence of digital payment infrastructure.
Cash (US Dollar)
The US Dollar is the sole legal tender in Palau. Cash is widely used for smaller transactions, local markets, informal services, and among residents who may not have bank accounts. Given the small size of the economy and the absence of a central bank or domestic currency issuance, cash management relies entirely on commercial bank distribution.
